Deck Installation and Repair

New decks in wood or composite, rotting boards replaced, loose railings fixed, decks resealed.

Soft boards, loose posts and grey sealer

Most decks announce trouble in the same few places. Boards go soft where water sits, especially at the ends and around fasteners. Railings loosen as the post bolts work free. The sealer wears off and the surface goes grey, and moss settles into any board that stays shaded.

A screwdriver pushed into a board tells a lot. If the tip sinks in easily, that board is rotting from inside, and the framing under it deserves a look before anyone replaces the surface. Replacing planks over a soft joist only buys a season, so the probing matters as much as the new boards do.

Probing the boards and the ledger area

When the handyman comes out, expect the boards to be probed, the railing posts to be shaken, and the area where the deck meets the house to be checked closely, since that is where water collects. For a new deck the talk turns to wood or composite, and to extras like a built-in bench or lighting.

You hear the estimate before any work starts, and you decide from there. Call 360-813-6743 or send a request, and mention the rough size of the deck, how high it sits off the ground, and whether the trouble is the boards, the railing or the stairs.

Resealing and keeping the gaps clear

Wood decks in Mount Vernon do best when they are cleaned and resealed on a regular schedule, because a wet Skagit winter wears sealer thin well before the surface looks bad. Composite needs less, but it still collects moss in the shade and wants an occasional wash.

Sweep leaves and needles out of the gaps between boards, since debris holds water against the wood and keeps it wet long after the rain stops. Safe is the goal for any railing or stair, so a wobbly post is something to point out when the estimate is given.
